In 1980, I saw an article in a magazine which showed an aircraft designer standing by his aircraft which was so stunning I was compelled to find out more. In those pre-internet days, that was quite a task. However, I eventually tracked down Burt Rutan at the Rutan Aircraft Factory, Mojave, California and ordered the information pack.
Being taken over by The Force, I bought a set of plans, and then tried to work out how I would build an aircraft. I'd built kit cars, and done engineering at college, but the world of "Mouldless composite construction" was a new one to me. Thus I "wrote" to the International VarEze Hospitality Club offering a plane ticket and housing to anyone willing to come over and get me started.
Al Coha replied, saying that he had just retured from Ryan Aerospace where he was in charge of materials and processes, and was looking to make a clean break and see England and possibly Europe. Al was also an ATP, CFI, and EAA designee for the San Diego Chapter of the EAA, and had built a Vari Eze.
